Preservative & Antioxidant

Preservative & Antioxidant Ingredients or Chemicals

Description of Preservative & Antioxidant: preservatives come in many different varieties and are natural or chemical substances that prevent or inhibit degradation by microbial growth or by undesirable chemical changes. Antimicrobial preservatives prevent or slow degradation by bacteria, yeasts and/or molds. Antioxidant preservatives inhibit or prevent reactions that can occur when certain ingredients combine with oxygen in the presence of light or heat.

It is well known that food products are prone to expiration and therefore need preservatives. Preservatives can keep food fresher for longer periods of time, extending its shelf life and slowing or preventing changes in the look, feel and smell of the products. Much the same thing is true for formulations in the Personal Care, Cleaning, Pharmaceutical and many other industries. Personal Care products like toothpaste, creams, shampoo and especially decorative cosmetics require careful preservation to keep the product from spoiling. A well-known antioxidant in food is ascorbic acid and an example of a personal care anti-oxidizing ingredient is Benzophenone 4 and a personal care antimicrobial is Ingrephen BWPS.
